Q. What are some of the challenges with machining aluminum as opposed to other metals?

Machining aluminum versus others metals is just a matter of having the knowledge of what needs to be done, and adjusting the process for the material being machined. The challenges usually come from the shape of the aluminum extrusion. Solid plate or blocks are different than most extrusions.

Aluminum extrusion profiles with thin protruding walls, combined with solid sections will cause problems with vibrations, where the solid parts of the profile will machine differently. Not being able to support certain areas of the aluminum extrusion may lead to deflection and bending. This can cause considerable waste and time. Tool paths will have to be changed and types of cutting tools as well to find the optimum path in which to produce quality parts with each cycle.
